Ratings success for reality shows
ITV's singing contest had an average audience of 7.5 million, while BBC One's ballroom extravaganza attracted 7.4 million, provisional figures show.
But during the 45-minute period when both shows were on the air, Strictly Come Dancing had a larger audience.
On Sunday, actor Brian Capron was voted out of the BBC One show, while the X Factor judges chose their 12 finalists.
Capron, best known for playing serial killer Richard Hillman in ITV soap, Coronation Street, and Scottish rugby star Kenny Logan both had to repeat their waltzes for the judges.
In the X Factor, Simon Cowell selected girl band Hope, who were assembled from a group of rejected auditionees and are already a strong favourite to win the show in December.
He will also mentor boy band Futureproof and sibling singers Same Difference.
Dannii Minogue put through another hot favourite, 22-year-old soloist Andy Williams, alongside 18-year-old Leon Jackson and tenor Rhydian Roberts. 
Roberts has divided the show's judging panel, with Sharon Osbourne claiming: "I want to throw things at him, he's revolting."
Rhydian said: "Wouldn't it be amazing to use my God-given talent to sing around the world, have number one albums and singles and on the back of that to be knighted and meet the Queen? These are the kind of dreams I'm filled with."
Osbourne, who is tutoring girls aged 14-24, selected Alisha Bennett, Kimberley Southwick and Emily Nakanda to represent her in the final stages of the competition.
Music mogul Louis Walsh was given responsibility for the over-25s, and put through Beverley Trotman, Daniel De Bourg and Niki Evans - who applied for the show after finding an entry form in her father's belongings after he died.
Marital showdown
Strictly Come Dancing kicked off its fifth series on Saturday by introducing its seven male contestants.
Footballer John Barnes received the highest score of the night - 26 - for his cha cha cha with dance partner Nicole Cutler. 
Capron fared less well, with judge Arlene Phillips comparing his waltz to "a wake".
The other male contestants include snooker player Willie Thorne, EastEnders star Matt Di Angelo, Blue Peter host Gethin Jones and TV presenter Dominic Littlewood.
Logan is going up against his wife, sports presenter Gabby, who is also a contestant.
Also taking part are former EastEnders star Letitia Dean, actress Stephanie Beacham and Rod Stewart's wife Penny Lancaster-Stewart.
Actress Kelly Brook and R&B singer Alesha Dixon are also in the line-up, as is GMTV presenter Kate Garraway - who was forced to sit out the first episode after sustaining a dance-related injury.
Both Strictly Come Dancing and The X Factor are among the UK's highest-rated programmes, with more than 10 million people tuning in for the final episodes of last year's series.
Cricketer Mark Ramprakash took home the dancing crown, while singer Leona Lewis was The X Factor winner.
