The beat goes on and on for Idol judge Jake Gold
Jake Gold has a hard time even comprehending what taking a vacation might be like. The Canadian Idol judge, artist manager and record label king-pin says that while the idea of a vacation is nice, he doesn't need or want one because he's doing what he loves.
"I love what I do," said Gold, admitting he pretty much works around the clock. "It's what I've been doing for such a long time. It's just part of what I do. It's who I am. I love music and I love the bands and I get to choose the clients I work with."
That said, he probably wouldn't have the time if he felt otherwise.
"It's always busy, just nonstop," Gold told Eye on Idol from his downtown Toronto office. "I've got the Cliks on the road in Europe. I've got three records getting ready to come out in the next few months... Thank God for my Blackberry."
The records on their way come from up-and-coming Kingston solo artist Chris Koster, catchy garage rockers Dearly Beloved and indie act The Populars.
Then there's the Cliks, an androgynous all-girl band who seem to have mastered the art of the catchy tune. After a summer pepped with shows and a few visits to the Canadian Idol audience, the band is now on the road in Europe and heading back to North America to tour with the Cult later this fall.
Idol judge Sass Jordan, also a client of Gold's, is also working on a record, although hers is currently in the songwriting phase. When asked about the dynamic between the Idol colleagues when wearing their manager and artist hats, Gold said he's happy to report that things are always the same - fiery!
"It's fun because we never hold anything back from each other," said Gold, who took over Jordan's management during the first year they worked together on Canadian Idol. "We're very honest with each other at all times. That was one of the rules we said to each other when we first started.
"If we disagree on the show it's no different than if we disagree in real life."
One thing both Jordan and Gold were able to come to consensus on this year was the potential for success within Idol winner Brian Melo, and the performance allure of special guest Enrique Iglesias.
"I was really pleased with the whole season," Gold said. "The winner was really strong and we had great performers on the show. I was really impressed with Enrique. I was really impressed with Kelly Clarkson.
"I think this year went great."
