Idol Damien turns to a career on TV

A TELEVISION career is the next goal for high-achieving talent contest winner Damien Leith.

The 32-year-old Australian Idol 2006 winner has just finished filming Saving Kids – a documentary series that looks at the stories of patients and their families in Sydney's Children's Hospital.

Leith hopes it is the first of many on-camera opportunities. "I've definitely enjoyed it (television); it's been a great thing to be involved in," he said.

With two young boys of his own, Leith said he related to the Channel 10 show.

"There's definitely moments that are heart-breaking at times and upsetting at times," he said. "I've been reading scripts and I've been completely distracted by the stories themselves because they're just really incredible."

The musician said the new show also made him realise just how lucky he was that his children were healthy. "I was whingeing about having three sleepless nights and then you're involved in the show and you just think, 'What am I complaining about'?" he said.

While the television role has opened his heart and eyes to a possible future career, the lad from Ireland said he was not willing to throw away his music career just yet.

He is writing songs for his third album, which he hopes to release at the end of the year, as well as writing his second book, due out this year.

* Saving Kids premieres at 8pm on Thursday, February 7, on Ten.
