Introducing an All-New Media Idol
Canadian Media Idol is back – but with a twist! CTV is once again inviting members of the national media to sing - and play - their hearts out for charity. The third annual national Media Idol championship begins Friday, January 25 in Edmonton – just one day before the kick-off of Canadian Idol's sixth cross-country audition tour – and will continue to nine other cities across the country. Last year, the Canadian Idol judging panel selected Media Idol winners. This year, members of the press will put their fates in the hands of the voting public – just like Canadian Idol competitors. Their performances will be judged on the internet from viewers across the country – all in pursuit of $10,000 for local charities.
Prior to public auditions at each stop on the 2008 Canadian Idol Audition Tour, a Canadian Idol celebrity will travel to participating media outlets for Media Idol auditions. With a video camera in tow, the Canadian Idol cast member will give some playful coaching to the Media Idol competitors as well as offer advice and information to the participating outlets' audiences about the upcoming local auditions. As with Canadian Idol, Media Idol competitors will either sing a cappella or while accompanying themselves on a musical instrument.
Every Media Idol audition will be posted on the official Canadian Idol website, idol.CTV.ca, for four days, at which time competitors can inspire local audiences to vote for them as a local winner. At the end of the national Media Idol audition tour, the 10 local winners will again encourage audiences to support their bid to win the national Media Idol Champ title by voting online at idol.CTV.ca. The national winner will be announced while the Top 10 Media Idol finalists are in Toronto this summer.
Each local media winner will receive $1,000 to donate to the charity of their choice, an expenses-paid trip to Toronto to attend a Canadian Idol Top 10 show, and year-long bragging rights over fellow local competitors!
Last year, over 100 members of the media from across Canada participated in the second national Media Idol competition, raising $11,000 for charities from Vancouver to St. John's. In July, the 11 Media Idol finalists were flown to Toronto where Peter Harrison from Halifax radio station C100 was named the national champion.
"If you've ever been watching Canadian Idol and thought, even for a moment, Hey, I could do that! - then you have to try out for Media Idol," said Harrison. "It's a blast and you'll get a glimpse of what the amazingly talented contestants on Canadian Idol go through. And, if you're lucky enough to get to the Idol stage in Toronto, you'll really know what it's like to be an Idol."
"This was an awesome experience," said fellow competitor Jay Oliver of Winnipeg's 102.3 Clear FM following his tryout last season. "It was very nerve-racking, and I have a whole new respect for anyone who aspires to become the next true Canadian Idol. It's a lot easier to sit on the couch than it is to get up there and do it."
Media outlets are encouraged to challenge other members of their local media to see who best represents their city in the Media Idol finals.
Members of the media interested in participating should RSVP to Allie Page at apage@ctv.ca or call 416.559.4365. Challengers must be members of a reputable media outlet. CTV reserves the right to limit the number of challengers.
