SEASON 1, 2002

Winner: Kelly Clarkson

Texas-born Clarkson has become a genuine music superstar, and has largely cut her ties to "Idol" since finishing second in first "Idol" contest. She was soured in part by "From Justin to Kelly," a disastrous film she was contractually obligated to do with runner-up Justin Guarini. She doesn't really need the "Idol" cachet any more: Her second album, 2004's "Breakaway," was a monster hit that sold 6 million copies in the United States and 11 million worldwide. She has won two Grammy Awards, and is nominated for another this year. Her current album is "My December."

Standout::

# Tamyra Gray: "Idol" finalist has survived a few bumps to find success as a lyricist and actress. After "Idol," she was dropped by her label, J Records, for being regarded as "difficult." Later released an album with "Idol" management company, 19 Entertainment. Wrote lyrics to hit song "I Believe," for season three winner Fantasia Barrino and co-wrote "you Thought Wrong" for Clarkson. Starred in film "The Gospel" and Broadway musical "Bombay Dreams."

Notables::

# Justin Guarini: Guarini, who was born in Georgia but grew up in Doylestown, has mostly been obscured by Clarkson's wake, but has carved out a modest career as a singer/songwriter and sometime actor. His first, self-titled album had little shelf life, and his recording label, RCA, dropped him. Second album, "Stranger Things Have Happened," reworks jazz standards and has been well-received (at least by critics). Also has sung on albums by other jazz musicians, including "Foreign Shores" by bassist David Hughes.

# Nikki McKibbin: Top 10 "Idol" finalist has gone reality TV route, competing in "Battle of the Network Reality Stars" on Bravo and appearing in E! channel's "Kill Reality."

# Ryan Starr: "Idol" bad girl and seventh-place finisher also went "reality" route, appearing on "Battle of the Network Reality Stars" (with McKibbin) and a season of "The Surreal Life." Also was featured in "Hottest Women of Reality" swimsuit calendar. A digital single, "My Religion," has sold very well on iTunes.

Jim Verraros: Only openly gay "Idol" finalist more lovable than talented, signing songs to his deaf parents in early rounds. Involved in mini-scandal when Fox asked him to remove gay-friendly comments from his network-sponsored "Idol" Web site. Post-"Idol" work includes studio album "Rollercoast" and role in gay flick "Eating Out."
