‘Pinoy Idol’ gets mixed notices

MANILA, Philippines—After months of auditions and other preparations, “Pinoy Idol” finally saw the light of TV day last Saturday on GMA-7. The singing tilt’s initial telecast focused on the auditions held in Mindanao, where thousands trilled or croaked, but only 39 got the jurors’ nod to move on to the semifinal rounds in Manila.

How well did the prospective singing stars do? Based on the auditions excerpted on the show, the talent pool wasn’t that impressive. Quite a number of auditionees had pretty good voices, but they went the usual gaya-gaya route and imitated some name singers’ vocal stylizations, so the impact they made was minimal.

The auditions held in Davao City were particularly disappointing. We’ve directed musicals in that southern city, so we know that it has a deep pool of singing talents, but only a few outstanding vocal performances were heard on last Saturday’s telecast. Why didn’t a greater number of Davao’s gifted young singers join the tryouts?

Like its American counterpart, “Pinoy Idol” is also going in for side features on some of its more “interesting” auditionees, a number of whom have “unusual” stories to tell. Frankly, these cute, touching or weird sidelights tend to overstay their welcome after a while. They also encourage brash no-talents to join the tryouts just to get their 15 seconds of exceedingly transient “fame,” and that can get to be a drag.
