Simon Cowell Wants "American Idol" Contestants To Show Personality

Los Angeles, CA (CNS) - Judge Simon Cowell, the outspoken judge from "American Idol," is speaking out on what he thinks the contestants are lacking this season. Cowell believes they are lacking "personality."

Michael Johns, whose elimination came as a shock to fans, apparently had a funny personality that kept his fellow Idol contestants in stitches. Carly Smithson announced that when the contestants went to do their first Ford commercial without Johns, that it wasn't as fun and they kept wondering who would crack all the jokes.

While Johns may have been the life of the party, on stage his personality wasn't shining through. He was shown more as a heartthrob.

Cowell suggests the contestants stop giving safe answers to interview questions and stop making safe song selections. Cowell wants to see their personalities shine through.

Six contestants remain on "American Idol," which will return to FOX on Tuesday.
