Dufty bashes 'American Idol' for writers' pay

PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- You might think San Francisco City Hall doesn't care about bad singers, good singers or covers of pop songs.

You'd be wrong.

One day before "American Idol" swings in for auditions, Supervisor Bevan Dufty is introducing a resolution today that chides the hit show's parent company for how little it pays its writers.

The nonbinding measure calls on FremantleMedia North America, which produces "Idol," "Family Feud," "The Price Is Right" and other shows, to provide its employees with industry standard benefits and comply with state wage and hour laws.

"American Idol" will open its eighth season Thursday with auditions in San Francisco.

Singers from ages 16 to 28 who want their chance at stardom and aren't concerned about writers' wages may go to the Cow Palace in Daly City before 8 a.m. Thursday to get a wristband that saves them an audition spot. Camping out is permitted.
