'American Idol' hopefuls line up for shot at stardom

Auditions for "American Idol" hopefuls will get under way Tuesday at the Izod Center in East Rutherford.

About 3,000 hopefuls people -- many who arrived in the wee hours of the morning -- lined up at the Meadowlands Sunday to register for the tryouts.

But no performances occurred Sunday -- at least not inside the arena.

Those in line got a wristband that grants them access to the auditions, where each contestant will have about 20 seconds to impress the judges and hopefully win a spot on the hit Fox television show.

Patrick Lynn, a senior producer for "American Idol," said many people want to be among the first to perform when auditions start. But Lynn disagrees with that strategy, saying most prospective contestants are often tired in the morning.

He said those who audition in the middle of the day often sound better.
