Youngest Australian Idol Tom Williams in tune with fame

THE pressure of Australian Idol broke Matt Corby but this year's youngest contestant Tom Williams says he has what it takes to win the competition.

At 16, Williams is the youngest to make the final 12 since Australian Idol began in 2003.

Corby was also 16 and the youngest when he came second last year. But he appeared to struggle with the pressure and fame, even saying he didn't care about the outcome going into the Opera House finale.

"Matt seems like a kind of shy guy that wouldn't cope with it but I think I should be right," Williams said.

"It is an awesome ride. I want to be here, he didn't, there is a big difference."
Williams is in Year 10 and has a tutor so he can continue his studies during the show. He said he liked the idea of being recognised.

Home for Williams right now is a waterside mansion on Sydney's north shore where contestants live together during the series.

Spanning four storeys and comprising six bedrooms, four bathrooms, an exercise room, swimming pool, music room, a lift, several living areas, an in-house cook and a 24-hour security guard, the house is rumoured to cost more than $10,000 a week to rent.
