Report: YouTube inks deal with ‘American Idol’ producer

Video sharing site YouTube has inked a deal with Fremantle Media, the producer of “American Idol” and similar programs, Reuters reports.

The deal comes on the same day YouTube and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer announced an agreement and a month after the San Bruno company’s deal with CBS Corp.

London-based Fremantle and YouTube — now owned by Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) — will work together to produce programs to show on YouTube. They’ll split the revenue from the shows.

Reuters said a Fremantle executive wouldn’t guess at the value of the deal, but quoted her as saying the “American Idol” web site brought in $13 million last year.

Fremantle is part of the RTL Group in Luxemborg, owned by German giant Bertelsmann.

Fremantle produced “Pop Idol” in the United Kingdom and then the American copy of it, “American Idol.” Because of a legal dispute, it couldn’t use the word “Pop” in other versions of the show, hence the variety of titles like “Australian Idol,” “Canadian Idol,” “Idols West Africa” and “Singapore Idol.”
