Wherefore, ‘Pinoy Idol’?
MANILA, Philippines—The latest ratings report on “American Idol” is that Season 8 was “launched [last week] with 10 percent fewer viewers than last year’s opener.”
This, the report noted, was “despite hoopla surrounding a new judge.”
A case of audience fatigue? Is this the reason that GMA 7 has not confirmed the launch of “Pinoy Idol” Season 2?
Last year, “Pinoy Idol” auditions started Jan. 17, and airing commenced in April. It was effectively the second Philippine franchise of the world’s most popular talent search. In 2007, the first local version of “American Idol” was aired on ABC 5 (now TV5) and was called “Philippine Idol.”
Wilma Galvante, GMA 7 senior vice president for Entertainment, had no news about a new edition of “Pinoy Idol” when asked during a press conference last week for the network’s show fare this year.
She said there were “learnings” about last year’s search that were up for discussion with “Idol’s” international production company, FremantleMedia.
Pressed, Galvante singled out the text-voting mechanics, saying, “It’s different for [the Philippines].” She did not elaborate. But with or without “Pinoy Idol,” Galvante said, a big talent search is up on the Kapuso channel. “We will revive ‘Starstruck.’”
In any case, she said, the network was scheduled to sit down with Fremantle this week.
The “fewer” “American Idol” viewers last week still numbered 30.1 million for Fox network, “the biggest audience for any US television broadcast so far this season.”
TV5 is reportedly prepared to snap up the franchise, should GMA 7 decide to pass up this year. Meanwhile, the clock ticks on
