Australian Idol Judge Dropped

An Australian disc jockey who is well-known for outrageous stunts and who moonlighted as a judge on the reality series “Australian Idol” seems to have lost both jobs after an incident on his radio show in which a 14-year-old girl said that she had been raped.

The Guardian reported that the disc jockey Kyle Sandilands was dropped from his “Idol” judging position and that the Sydney radio station 2Day FM had taken his show off the air “pending a review” of what happened during a live broadcast of “The Kyle and Jackie O Show” on July 29.

During the show, the girl was attached to a polygraph machine and was quizzed by her mother about whether she was sexually active. The girl referred to being raped when she was 12, adding that her mother was already aware of the assault. Mr. Sandilands responded by saying: “Right, and is that the only sexual experience you’ve had?” Both radio-show hosts later apologized on air, saying they had not been aware beforehand of the girl’s account of being raped.

The Guardian reported that the New South Wales state government had ordered police and child welfare officers to investigate the account.

“Australian Idol’s” producers said that Mr. Sandilands’ radio persona was increasingly conflicting with the family-oriented nature of the “Idol” show. “The recent controversy,” the producers added, “has highlighted more than ever the conflicting attitude of the two careers.”
