Canadian Idol tryouts set for WEM

EDMONTON - Practice those scales - Canadian Idol is coming back to Edmonton.

Aspiring stars can audition for the sixth season of the show on Jan. 26 and 27 at West Edmonton Mall.

In 2004, the eventual Idol champ, Kalan Porter, came from a local audition.

His mom had to convince him to make the drive up from Medicine Hat.

"At first, the judges actually just sat there," Porter told The Journal.

"Zack (Werner) yelled at me a few times - they didn't show it on TV. He was like 'Move around!' because I was just standing there and felt intimidated."

Idol producers used to alternate between Edmonton and Calgary from year to year, but both cities are included in the upcoming 10-city tryout tour.

Once again, Idol hopefuls will be allowed to bring instruments to their tryouts. Last year, 42 per cent of gold-ticket winners - those who were invited to Toronto - played an instrument, according to CTV.
