Michiganders hit final notes on 'Idol'

There was a big moment for a Michigan contestant during Hollywood week on "American Idol."

Unfortunately for Jake Mellema, 20, of Sand Lake, it came when Simon Cowell criticized him on Tuesday's episode for choosing to play the drums during his vocal performance.

"That was a ridiculous idea," muttered Cowell after Mellema was through.

Finished, too, were the hopes of several contestants in the Hollywood round who had ties to Michigan. They weren't among the top 24 finalists announced Wednesday night.

Diana and Alyonka Larionov, daughters of former Detroit Red Wing Igor Larionov, didn't make the cut. Neither did Beth Stalker of Grand Blanc or William Scott of Detroit.
