American Idol - The Off-White Album
First things first: The best Top 12 ever? Not likely — "ever" is a long time, after all — though it's hard to remember back even as far as last season.
One thing is sure, though. If this season works out the way it should — and American Idol doesn't always — this could be the best Top 5 since time began. Hey, this is American Idol we're talking about here: Hyperbole sells!
The Lennon-McCartney songbook could have proven to be a long, hard night, but now that it's over, it wasn't nearly as lame as I feared going in.
Sure, Paula Abdul was her usual supremely irritating self, but then she lives on the yellow submarine, right? We know this. I do wish she'd stop interrupting Simon Cowell, though — just about the only judge with something concretely constructive to say a lot of the time — but she won't change. Not now. Not ever.
And the verbal sparring between Simon and Ryan Seacrest is getting a little old. And when it has a nasty edge, as it did at times tonight, it's not a lot of fun to watch. "Obnoxious" was the word Simon used, but I don't think that's quite right. "Clueless" is more like it. "Obnoxious" is Simon's tag; Ryan the Doorman is more a mannequin with a mike, flip and dismissive when he should be moving the show along.
But you know what?
Doesn't matter. There were some wonderful moments tonight. And the really cool thing is, those moments came when least expected — in the middle of the show and not at the beginning or end — and they came from some of the least expected people.
