Battle to be American Idol heats up

The battle to be the next American Idol is getting tougher, as the contestants sing their heart out to win the public's vote to stay in the top 12.

The final 16 wannabes will be cut down, as two girls and two guys get eliminated in the next round. And according to judge Simon Cowell, it will be a close call.

"There are around three great guys and three great girls, and they're evenly matched," Simon said.

"I didn't think the girls were as good as the guys. But my favourite performance was Amanda Overmyer."

Simon seems to have a few favourites including the three Davids - 17-year-old David Archuleta, 24-year-old David Hernandez (whose stripping past was revealed earlier this week), and rocker David Cook, as well as Irish native Carly Smithson.

"There are no questions that you'll make it to the finals and probably the final two," the British judge told David Archuleta.

He also told David Hernandez: "You have 100 percent secured your place in the final," and David Cook: "I like people who go out there and take a few risks. I really hope we'll see you next week."
