Idol shines at Canadian Music Week
When Canadian Music Week rolls into Toronto March 5th, Canadian Idol will have its own chance to shine.
Not only is current Idol Brian Melo performing alongside the likes of Alanis Morissette and Finger Eleven, Idol Executive Producer John Brunton is getting inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and judge Jake Gold is co-chairing the entire week's events.
"It's an honour to do it," said Gold, who will be sharing the duties with the Edge 102.1 program director Alan Cross and The Hour's George Stroumboulopoulos. "Every year they ask different people to do it to help be the face for Canadian Music Week and help Canadian Music Week promote itself."
Gold, who is the co-owner of Kindling Music, an independent record label distributed by Warner Music, and The Management Trust, has been involved with Canadian Music Week (CMW) for 26 years -- even before it was officially named as such -- and said it's a great thing for the Canadian music industry.
"As the major record companies become less about investing in new talent, these kinds of things have become way more important because it's a real place for independents to meet each other and trade ideas and also benefit from each other. Maybe I'll meet someone from a label in Germany or a promoter in Germany who likes one of my bands and wants to bring them over and as a result I'll get the record put out over there because the band's coming to tour there so there are lots of opportunities."
