'Idol' party rocks for Overmyer

LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The End Zone Bar and Grill in Lafayette was home to dozens of Amanda Overmyer T-shirts, Amanda Overmyer signs and Amanda Overmyer wigs.

The judges said ...
Amanda Overmyer, the biggest rock star to live in Mulberry, sang "Back in the U.S.S.R." on the second week of Beatles songs on the reality show.

Wearing jeans and a sleeveless blue shirt, Overmyer interacted with and worked the crowd during the 90-second performance.

However, all three judges had criticisms for Overmyer's performance. Randy Jackson pointed out pitch problems in the song and gave it a "7 out of 10." Paula Abdul said Overmyer stumbled at the beginning of the song and was ahead of the beat.

The gruff Simon Cowell was hoping for a ballad from Overmyer. He said the performance was "predictable" and warned her that she is "in danger of being boring."

Overmyer later responded, "Ballads are boring."

She defiantly said she wants to show America how she would perform at one of her shows. When Cowell said she wasn't out there yet, she said that is how she would sing at "a bar in Lafayette."

The mention of Lafayette brought thunderous applause and screams of joy from Overmyer's many fans at End Zone Bar and Grill.

Overmyer, the other 10 contestants and millions of TV viewers will see which singer will go home on "American Idol" at 9 tonight on Fox.

With a raucous crowd in attendance, the signs were held and the shirts and wigs were worn Tuesday night to support the 23-year-old "American Idol" contestant from Mulberry. One long dark wig with the blonde-streaked bangs was worn by Lafayette's Rick Lynch.
Overmyer led off the episode with "Back in the U.S.S.R." It was the second week in which all of the "American Idol" contestants sang Beatles songs.
"I thought she did pretty good," said Lynch, who saw Overmyer perform live years ago when she was with the local hard rock band Steeleto.
He has been an avid watcher of Overmyer's since the "Idol" season began.
Local radio station WXXB-FM 102.9 has been holding "American Idol" viewing parties for weeks at the End Zone. Tuesday's was busy as "Access Hollywood," the syndicated tabloid show, was taping the party. The footage will be aired tonight at 10:30 on WNDY in Indianapolis
