Last week the judges compared Carly Smithson with Kelly Clarkson. This week she sings “Blackbird.” What was a little acoustic gem becomes a big ol’ orchestrated ballad. Strings out of the ying-yang. Randy loves it. Paula thinks she has an amazing tone. Simon, thank goodness, hates the song choice and finds it indulgent.

Smithson replies that she feels like a blackbird, all broken by show biz, but Simon pronounces her free.
