Can Neil Diamond Save Brooke White: American Idol Top Five

Brooke White survived a major mistake last week on American idol. The Arizona sweetheart tried "You Must Love Me," from Evita and it was a disaster. She stopped right after beginning the song, and this time she wasn't playing an instrument, and then re-started the song. It wasn't pretty, and she really wasn't all that good with take two. But she survived elimination as Carly Smithson was voted off and amazingly, Brooke White didn't even hit the bottom two.

Many theories are being tossed about as to how she avoided elimination and the bottom two (she was probably in the bottom three but with just six contestants left the idol format usually dumps the bottom three for the bottom two). The most logical appears to be her fan base, and the fans of Kristy Lee Cook (eliminated two weeks ago) gave her just enough to keep her on the show.

Can Neil Diamond save Brooke White? His style of songs would seem to match up well and Brooke could certainly go a variety of ways (Forever in Blue Jeans, Cracklin' Rosie and much more) and really cement her spot as a contender for the top three. But she needs to get back that funky and bluesy edge she had when she sounded and looked like a throwback folk singer.

It's hard to say who will go this week, based solely on last week it would seem that Brooke and Syesha Mercado are right on the edge. Perhaps jason castro as well. All of our news from American idol is here. My top three right now in no particular order is Brooke White, David Cook and David Archuleta.
