DeBruyne vying for Idol audition
Today could be the culmination of a dream for former Tillsonburg resident Steve DeBruyne.
The aspiring actor, who currently lives in New York, will find out today whether or not his online audition for Canadian Idol has earned him a coveted spot among the top performers.
DeBruyne said that while he’s always thought about auditioning for Idol, he only did so at the urging of his cousin in Delhi, who contacted him about a last-chance call for online tryouts through CTV’s website. For DeBruyne, who’s now 28, the cap for a spot on Canadian Idol - this opportunity represents a one-shot deal.
DeBruyne chose Aerosmith’s Don’t Want to Miss a Thing for his audition, and so far, more than 1,300 people have checked out his tape. DeBruyne said he’s both pleased and flattered by the attention his tape is getting, whether or not he gets a formal Idol audition.
Formally trained in New York, and with an impressive resume of musical theatre productions to his credit including The Fully Monty and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, DeBruyne said he’s got the experience – and the desire – to hold his own in the cutthroat realm of Idol competition.
"Having been living in the land of the performing arts for a while I would really appreciate the break," he said, adding he’s pleased with his audition and hopes the judges will be also.
DeBruyne, who lived in Tillsonburg until age 14, said he must be prepared to pack up and leave for Toronto within two weeks if he gets an Idol audition. While some would find the uncertainty of that kind of life-altering move unnerving, DeBruyne is taking it all in stride and said he’s been looking for a reason to return to Canada for some time.
DeBruyne said he will keep readers of The Tillsonburg News informed of his progress. In the meantime, those interested in seeing his online audition can do so by checking out http://lastchance.idol.ctv.ca/mediadetail/141508
