Carly: 'Not that sad' to be eliminated from 'Idol'

Big-voiced American Idol contestant Carly Smithson chatted with reporters Thursday, following the tattooed singer's ouster Wednesday night. USA TODAY listened in on the conference call.

Q: What was going through your head last night when you made the bottom two?

A: At this stage, everybody's thinking they're going home. I'm actually not that sad to be leaving. I think I made enough of an impact to be able to reach a good fan base. And now I just get to be me without a theme night and make a really cool record, so I'm excited.

Q: Describe that period when you were not singing. Why did you feel like you couldn't sing?

A: I worked really hard to try and break into the music industry. It started to become kind of, not negative to me, but I needed to leave it to love it more, if you know what I mean. We moved to San Diego, I started singing at the bar, and I just started to want it so bad again.
