Jac does it in Bahasa
Jaclyn Victor has embarked on a new album and Bahasa Malaysia is her language of choice this time around; her only choice, in fact. DENNIS CHUA writes.
A HOUSEHOLD name ever since winning the first reality talent show Malaysian Idol four years ago, Jaclyn Victor is busy working on her third album, which will be entirely in Bahasa Malaysia.
Scheduled for completion by year’s end, the selection of pop, R&B and soul songs would be written by Jaclyn in collaboration with established names in the music industry.
“I always believe that learning new skills is vital for an artiste’s survival. Thus, I’m learning to write my own materials,” she said.
Jaclyn describes the effort as her labour of love for Malaysians, and the challenge she has always sought.
“While I’m comfortable speaking and singing in both English and Bahasa, I’ve always been better in English. However, since Malaysian Idol, I’ve brushed up on Bahasa.”
While Jaclyn does not consider herself a “pop phenomenon” along the lines of Asmawi Ani (Mawi), the 30-year-old singer has nevertheless been the recipient of several music awards.
A year after Malaysian Idol, Jaclyn won the Asia Music Festival in Shanghai, China performing her hit song Gemilang.
The song clinched her the Best Performance and Best Song at RTM’s annual chart awards event Hits 1 in 2006. It also won Best Ballad and Best Song at TV3’s Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL) that year.
