A surprising American Idol night
The usual American Idol favourites have failed to inspire compliments from judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson in the latest episode of the show.
Kristy Lee Cook - who is perennially in the bottom two on elimination night - received the highest praise from Simon after her performance of Martina McBride's Anyway, who told her: "It was very, very good indeed. You look like a star."
Paula agreed, saying: "You outdid yourself."
With his rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow and ukulele playing, dread-locked Jason Castro and baby-faced favourite David Archuleta, who sang Robbie Williams' Angels, also impressed the panel.
"That was your hottest moment of the whole season," said Randy to David, while Simon told him: "You'd sail through to the next round."
The harshest comments of the night were saved for Irish native Carly Smithson, who, following her version of Queen's The Show Must Go On, was given a warning by Simon. Both Randy and Paula thought she failed to "connect" on stage.
The remaining eight contestants had to choose inspirational songs in the spirit of Idol Gives Back, the charity version of the reality singing competition.
