'Idol' auditions draw throngs to Glendale

Thousands of singers faced the heat and stood in line for hours outside of Jobing.com Arena to have their chance to be the next American Idol.

Jennifer Benjamin, a 16-year-old Surprise resident, waited for several hours outside of the Glendale arena to audition for the Fox reality television competition. She was accompanied by her aunt and a few of her cousins, who drove in from California for the audition as well.

"I'm very excited because you never know when this opportunity when ever roll around again so I had to come down and do this," she said.

Aspiring singers from the Valley and adjoining states sang before the producers of the hit TV show, which launched the career of 2007 winner and Glendale resident Jordin Sparks. Some drove as short as 15 minutes away, while other flew in from as far as Chicago.
