X Factor judges blast Welsh talent

THE X Factor judges have blasted Welsh talent after holding the hit show’s auditions in Cardiff this week, saying: “This year’s winner won’t come from Wales”.

Pop supremo Simon Cowell said they had found almost NO talent in Wales – and that viewers would be let down when they saw the show.

And Boyzone and Westlife manager Louis Walsh said all the contestants they had seen in Cardiff had been lunatics – and that the Welsh contestants were the worst in years.

The judges, along with Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole and pop star Dannii Minogue, were in the capital for the second round of auditions of the hit ITV1 show, which is back on TV screens in August.

They had been staying in five-star suites in Cardiff Bay’s posh St David’s Hotel & Spa, and filming during the day in Holland House Hotel, central Cardiff.

Singers who got through last week’s auditions will now face the tough boot-camp stage of the competition, where the hopefuls will begin to be whittled down for the live shows.

But Simon said very few had been successful in Wales – and that he had only found TWO girls he was impressed with.

Speaking exclusively to Wales on Sunday, he said: “The talent was in the minority in Wales, if I’m being honest with you.

“There were a lot of people that turned up that should not have been there.

“Don’t blame me when you see the show and you’re let down.”

Simon – who flew back to London in a private jet from Cardiff – said he was disappointed with the talent he had seen after last year’s runner-up Rhydian Roberts was discovered in Cardiff.

He said: “I would say there were only about two good girls, but then we saw a lot of people who were really bad.”

And Louis didn’t mince his words either, claiming the Welsh superstar wannabes had been the worst they had seen for years.

He said: “There’s no way the winner’s going to come from Wales. It has been very disappointing.

“The talent has just not been good enough.

“On a scale of one to 10, I would give the talent in Wales a three.”

He claimed he was exhausted by how bizarre the majority of the contestants had been.

He said: “There have been a lot of lunatics here – I was looking for Tom Jones and I got Bonnie Tyler.

“We need some good singers, and there haven’t been any good singers here.”

The judges were all flying up to Glasgow for the next stop of their auditions tour, before heading to Newcastle.

Louis said: “I’m glad we’re leaving Wales now – hopefully there will be more talent in Scotland.

“I’m just happy that we’re out of here now.”

Meanwhile, X Factor host Dermot O’Leary said a lot of the contestants had been sent packing with their tails between their legs. He said: “They’ve a lot of pride because they’ve got that Welsh gene – which makes them more interesting.

“I just care about the characters, and there have been some great characters.

“But I don’t hear them sing, so I couldn’t rate them.”

It’s a stark change from last year when Simon said Rhydian, 25, was the best thing to come out of Wales in years.

He signed Rhydian, from Sennybridge, Powys, up to his Song BMG label for a five album record deal, worth £1m.

During last year’s competition, Simon said: “You are a world-class singer. I’ve got to tell you, this year it’s an England, Wales and Scotland battle – and I think Wales is going to cause an upset.”

Louis agreed, saying: “You are the next biggest singer in Wales.”
