X Factor’s Andy tries new direction

X FACTOR crooner Andy Williams is ditching the ballads – by working with the producers behind hip-hop duo Outkast.

Andy, 23, shot to fame on last year’s hit show singing ballads, cruising through to the final stages of the show before being voted off.

But now the former asbestos worker says he is recording a new style of music the UK has never heard before.

He told Wales on Sunday: “I’m recording a lot at the moment and I’ve managed to get a good few contacts together.

“My music is going in a different direction now and I’m about to work with someone who was involved with Outkast. The UK won’t have had anything like it before.”

And as filming for the hit ITV1 show swings into action again, Andy, from Newport, has been ranked one of the UK’s hottest bachelors by girl’s mag Company.

He is one of 50 eligible British men who feature in the magazine’s Bachelor of the Year competition. He said: “The questions they asked me were very sexually orientated. I was quite shocked by how raunchy it was. But obviously it was a big compliment, and I was really chuffed.”

But he admitted he wasn’t strictly a bachelor – because he’s still together with his long-term girlfriend Katie Lynch, 20.

“We’re still together,” he said. “I’m dividing my time between London and Wales at the moment, so we still get to see each other.”

And meanwhile Andy has moved into a bachelor pad in west London with last year’s winner, Leon Jackson.

He said: “Neither of us are from London, so we thought it was the sensible thing to do. We were best mates from day one at boot-camp.”

They moved in together after wrapping up the X Factor tour earlier this year, which included performances from all the acts that made it through to the shows.

He said: “The last night of the tour in Wembley was emotional – I could hardly finish my song before I started crying.

“The whole thing was a dream come true – I just didn’t want it to end.”

And even though it’s almost a year since he was picked for the X Factor finals, Andy said he still keeps in touch with his former mentor Dannii Minogue, 36.

He said: “Dannii’s been the best mentor by far because she still gives us help and advice. I speak to her quite a lot and she actually helped me come up with this new style of music.”

And he rubbished rumours that Dannii and new judge Cheryl Cole, 25, were at loggerheads.

He said: “Dannii’s told me that they get on really well. Obviously last year her and Sharon didn’t see eye-to-eye, and I think she’s enjoying it more now she’s left.”

And although Andy’s still in touch with the other finalists, he said he doesn’t hear from fellow Welshman Rhydian Roberts anymore.

He said: “He’s the only one I don’t speak to. He’s been back and forth from America, recording his album, but I haven’t heard from him.”

Fighting Andy for the title of Bachelor of the Year is Pobol y Cwm actor Rhys Bidder, 23, who plays bad boy Macs in BBC Wales series.

The August edition of Company is out now.
