AUSTRALIAN Idol fans be warned. In the new series we will say goodbye to the so-called "gentle judge" and hello to a meaner Marcia Hines.

Word from behind the scenes of the karaoke TV show's upcoming sixth series is that Hines is no longer singing it softly to contestants.

Newly recruited host and former Idol songbird Ricki-Lee Coulter has let slip that there have been some big changes, "making the competition a lot more fierce".
