Idol’s Thanh Bui: 'The judges picked on me'

Australian Idol eliminee Thanh Bui has hit out at Australian Idol judges claiming they were hard on him because he has had previous singing experience.

“I’ve been through this before… the touring and signings and appearances and crazy timetables because we toured in six different countries,” Bui told LIVENEWS.com.au

“But what goes with that territory is that people expect more form you and the judges… they were really hard on me, it was either touchdown or nothing, there was no middle ground for me.”

The bitter accusations come after the married Vietnamese Australian’s surprise elimination from last night’s episode of Australian Idol. Most viewers had expected one of the girls to go rather than Bui the son of Vietnamese immigrants.

Bookmakers were also in shock after frantic betting on Sophie, Chrislyn and Roshani during the week.

Sportingbet’s Michael Sullivan says he was surprised punters hadn’t woken up to how hard it would be for Bui to adapt his style to Sunday’s ‘rock night’ theme.

“Thanh looked to be the least suited to rock night as early as last week,” said Sullivan.

“But we couldn’t write a bet on him either before or after Sunday night’s show.”

“Sophie, Chrislyn and Roshani were the only Idol hopefuls elimination punters wanted.”

According to Sullivan Victorian Sophie Paterson is the Idol most punters have knives out for.

“There’s no doubt that Sophie would be elimination favourite if Idol was done on a vote to leave basis,” he said.

“But she’s very much ‘love her’ or ‘hate her’ and her fan base is keeping her in the competition.”

And as for who will win Sullivan expects Queenslander Teale Jakubenko will be the next cab off the Idol rank - with Sophie Paterson following closely behind.

Meanwhile Wes Carr is still favourite to win the show. The Bondi local is $1.90 with Mark Spano trailing behind as second most likely on $4.00.
