Tax refund on X Factor Hero sales
Chancellor Alistair Darling has said he will refund tax on sales of The X Factor finalists' charity single Hero, the cover of Mariah Carey's 1993 hit.
"I support the efforts being made by the X Factor contestants," he said.
"In recognition of that, I'm proposing effectively to waive the VAT on the sale of these singles."
The track was recorded for Help for Heroes, which provides support for wounded servicemen and women, and the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.
The song is expected to become 2008's fastest-selling single and is currently the top seller at online stores Play.com and iTunes.
Hero topped the US Billboard chart and reached number seven in the UK when Mariah Carey originally released it in 1993.
