Record label dumps ‘American Idol’ starlet

Katharine McPhee became the third “American Idol” star to be dropped by a record label in three weeks, joining past winners Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks. Sony BMG - the mega-label that serves as the parent company to Arista, Columbia, Epic, J Records, RCA and others - is apparently cleaning house. RCA had not officially confirmed its split from the season-five runner-up as of yesterday, but a source confirmed the parting to Entertainment Weekly. McPhee’s one and only record released by RCA dropped in late 2006 and has sold less than 400,000 copies.
