His singing may not be awful, like that of the Chinese undergrad-turned-recording artiste, but he is equally endearing.
And he seems to be treading the same path, from Asian reject on American Idol to overnight star.
Unlike Hung, however, Renaldo Lapuz, a Filipino from Reno, Nevada, composed and sang his own song.
He was featured on the 17 Jan audition episode of the latest season of the reality show.
The smiling 45-year-old is shown walking into the audition room wearing a flamboyant outfit and enthusiastically singing his song, We're Brothers Forever, for judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.
For a good 10 minutes, the amused trio encouraged Lapuz to sing the chorus repeatedly.
