X Factor - Leon Jackson helps download sales

This year's X Factor success story has been cited as one of the reasons why music downloads are more popular than ever.

Sales for the Christmas week were announced as almost three million - which is over double that of the same week in 2006, the BPI announced with figures from the Official Charts Company.

According to the Telegraph, the successful week is partly due to Leon Jackson and Leona Lewis, who are the two most recent winners of X Factor and popular with thousands and thousands of the record-buying public.

The BPI represents the UK music industry and said that as more people buy and receive digital music players, an increased number now rely on music downloads for the latest songs.

"Recent years have seen a boost in download sales in the week after Christmas, but this was a larger increase than expected," said Matt Phillips, director of communications at the BPI.

Meanwhile, it emerged this week that Leon has had to cancel all upcoming performances for the next two weeks.

He has come down with a bout of tonsillitis and also had to pull out of a New Year's Eve gig in Edinburgh.
