I say that not because of the really lovely rendition you gave last night of John Lennon’s anthem, Imagine. I say that not because you make me and Paula Abdul smile. I say that not because six years ago you stood in a hotel lobby and belted out a Dream Girls song for Kelly Clarkson.
I say that because of the screaming.
The small audience in the American Idol studio could not contain itself for the last performer of the evening. As he stood up on that balcony, very Juliet-like, and Ryan announced that coming up after the break was David Archuleto, the entire room leapt to its feet, turned toward the 16-year-old, and screamed.
