Cowell: 'I don't believe in marriage'

LONDON, March 1 (UPI) -- Simon Cowell, the British producer and judge on the U.S. TV series "American Idol," says he doesn't plan to marry, fearing any wife would only want his money.

The 48-year-old multimillionaire said in the entertainment business there is no room for marriage because of the potential financial drawbacks one would suffer in a divorce, The Daily Mirror reported Saturday.

"I don't believe in marriage, certainly not in this business," Simon said. "The truth is that you get married and in a year or two they clean you out! It's just not going to work."

Cowell, who has been dating the same woman for the last five years, said marriage ultimately changes a person and places them in a dangerous position, the British newspaper said.

"We have contracts with artists that are 120 pages long and last five years. Then you go into marriage with no contract and the laws are a thousand years old," the "Idol" judge said. "It doesn't work -- it changes you. That whole culture just puts you in a very weakened position."
