From Idol top 40 to playing Saskatoon

Paul Filek (tonight at Lydia's) tried it the easy way, now he's doing it the right way. The aspiring acoustic guitar singer-songwriter from British Columbia placed in the top 40 in Canadian Idol last year. He's on the road, paying his dues and trying to make a name for himself. In the past he's sung the anthem for the Canucks, opened for Corb Lund and Styx and won numerous regional talent competitions.

That buzz you hear isn't your iPod on the fritz. It's the acclaim for new Montreal group Plants and Animals. Given instant cred because they're on the same label as Patrick Watson, the trio features Warren C. Spicer and Matthew Woodley, Haligonians by birth, who moved to Montreal and met Nicholas Basque at the music department of Concordia. They've been at it since '03 and started recording what would become their full-length debut Parc Avenue in '05 after setting up a studio in Spicer's apartment. Fresh from SXSW, they play Saturday at Amigo's.

Jason Collett (Wednesday at Amigo's) says his new record is what the kids are calling rock 'n' roll. "Not rock, not rock and roll, but rock 'n' roll music," Collett says. "I don't care much for the roots-rock tag or the singer-songwriter one and all the banality those genres conjure up. Rock 'n' roll music encompasses all sorts of influences -- country, blues, gospel -- all those things, and I'm just part of that tradition."
