'American Idol' stars ready for Thursday performance in Detroit
DETROIT, Michigan -- The "American Idol" winner should be a champ for the people, and David Cook is exactly that. The afternoon before his tour's July 1 opening night in Glendale, Ariz., Cook walked through the media area acknowledging each reporter. Later that evening, fans sitting side-stage got a special treat when Cook stood in the wings watching fellow contestant Brooke White, encouraging ticket holders to cheer her on.
"The goal is just to try to create some energy," Cook said in an interview with The Flint Journal before the Arizona show. "I think watching everybody else's set (in rehearsal), I've definitely got my work cut out for me. Everybody's bringing it. It's cool. If I can keep up with everybody else, I'll be just fine."
Modesty reigns with Cook, a Missouri resident. Cook didn't plan to audition for the show, but while waiting in line with his brother, Andrew, a local television reporter talked to Cook, who famously said, "I'm not auditioning." The interviewer replied, "You are now."
When Cook was crowned champion, he brought Andrew on stage with him to celebrate.
"He's the reason I'm here," Cook said, referring to the tour and the first-place status. "I feel like I'm here on his ticket. Any opportunity that I accrue to showcase the people who put me where I'm at, I'm all for it. So the fact that I was able to do that, that meant a lot to me."
Before his arena-performance debut, Cook admitted that it still hasn't sunk in that he won "American Idol."
"I'm still shocked. It's like, 'What?' The best way I can explain that moment was (that) it was just an out-of-body experience. I felt like I was watching it. I try to think about it sometimes. I still haven't really processed it. It still seems so foreign to me.
"I don't feel like I changed. It's like when you have a birthday. Somebody says, 'Do you feel older?' It's like, 'No.' I don't feel like anything's changed just yet."
But on July 1 Cook was ready to kick off the "Pop-Tarts Presents American Idols Live!" in front of nearly 15,000 fans. The show has a countdown feel to it, starting with a three-song set by No. 10 finalist Chikezie Eze and continuing through to a five-song performance by Cook, who arrived on stage to Lionel Richie's "Hello." The group numbers have been sliced to two, a drastic departure from past tours.
"Mainly, I'm doing stuff from the show," Cook said. "I'm going to be doing the single, 'Time of My Life.' And then I have one song that I didn't do on the show that I'm very, very excited about. It's high-energy. I'm hoping to get the crowd into it a little bit, and it means something to me."
Reportedly, while on tour, Cook will work on his debut record, slated to hit stores before the end of the year. So far, he has collaborated with a handful of heavy hitters: Collective Soul frontman Ed Roland, Our Lady Peace singer Raine Maida, The Nixons' Zac Maloy and Jason Wade of Lifehouse.
He seems most excited about Roland, who penned "The World I Know," a song that Cook sang.
"Aww, man, I am a big fan," Cook said. "He always seems to write just really solid hooky music. I got more nervous about meeting guys like him than I did anybody else through the show and stuff.
"The bands I get into, you always worry about, 'Are they going to be nice?' Ed was so cool. We're talking about going golfing when we swing through Atlanta on the tour. He's a stand-up guy. I was really, really happy with the way everything turned out."
