American Idol draws thousands to Glendale arena

Thousands of wanna-be Carrie Underwoods and Jordin Sparks turned out at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale Wednesday to snag a spot in Friday's "American Idol" auditions.

Contestants still can register for the Fox Broadcasting show's auditions Wednesday and Thursday at the arena.

Arena officials said they did not have a firm estimate of initial turnout, but put it in the thousands.

Phoenix is one of eight cities holding auditions for the Simon Cowell-produced talent show which has produced popular singers including Kelly Clarkson, Underwood, Chris Daughtery and Jennifer Hudson.

Glendale's Sparks won the Idol competition in 2006.
