A bittersweet party in the Idol mansion

At first, when Earl Stevenson begins to dance, he moves much like you'd expect a white guy from Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, to dance. He starts off kind of jerky, like a pigeon, but if you stay with him a bit everything comes together, and over the 90 seconds that Canadian Idol contestants get to strut their stuff, Stevenson manages to present whatever song he's singing in a wholly original fashion. As anybody who saw his performance of Light My Fire last Monday night can tell you, the dude is awesome.

It's not cool for an adult to be a fan of a Canadian Idol contestant, but I cannot deny the truth. I am a fan of Stevenson, and was delighted to attend a taping of CI and an after-party at the Idol mansion. It was time to see everybody Idol, up close.

Judge Jake Gold has the even skin tone of somebody who doesn't need the sun to tan. Throughout the taping, he swivels on his chair, looking back longingly at the crowd as if hoping to catch an admiring eye. Sass Jordan, walking gingerly, has to be helped to and from the judge's desk due to the deadly heels she's wearing. Farley Flex doesn't draw much attention to himself, content to occasionally turn around and chat with whomever is sitting in the rows behind him. On the other hand, Zach Werner gets up during the breaks and stands in the aisles amidst the audience. He's wearing sunglasses and he has his hands on his hips, as if challenging people to speak to him. I ask him how it's going, and he sighs, "hot." That was the extent of our conversation. Later, after the taping, with a cigarette dangling from his lip, he steps behind the wheel of his Mercedes and speeds away.
