American Idol Owns AMAs

It seems only natural that American Idol and the American Music Awards would go together, doesn't it? It sure did this year as two American Idol contestants were the big winners Sunday night at the AMAs - Chris Daughtry and Carrie Underwood rocked the awards, taking three trophies apiece. For the first time in the history of the American Music Awards, the prize winners were left up entirely to the fans, who voted in their favorite American Idol contestants. If fans vote for the AMAs, what exactly is the difference between them and things like the People's Choice Awards? We don't know either.

Chris Daughtry's band, Daughtry, won Favorite Pop/Rock Album for their self-titled debut and won awards for Favorite Breakthrough Artist and Adult Contemporary Artist. Chris Daughtry only finished in fourth place on the 2006 version of American Idol, but last night he beat out Norah Jones and John Mayer for Adult Contemporary Artist. We wonder how they would have done on American Idol. Chris Daughtry said, courtesy of E!, "Before I go anywhere with this, none of this would be possible for us without the fans. We realize no matter how good our music may be, you guys make us who we are and we thank you for that."

Carrie Underwood, who won American Idol a few years ago, completed the American Idol double-punch at the American Music Awards by winning Favorite Country Album for Some Hearts, Female Country Artist, and the T-Mobile Text-In Award. Carrie Underwood wins an award every week. Well, maybe not, but it seems close to us with the singer taking home Grammys and Country Music Awards this year.

Other winners at the American Music Awards this week, included Justin Timberlake who won Favorite Male Rock/Pop Artist and Soul/R&B Album for FutureSex/LoveSounds. Justin Timberlake accepted his award via satellite from Australia. T.I. also won two awards (and missed the ceremony because he's under house arrest in Atlanta) for Favorite Male Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album for T.I. vs. T.I.P.

Performers at the American Music Awards this year included Fergie, Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, Duran Duran, and Beyonce Knowles, who also accepted the International Artist Award. That award has been given five times before to Led Zeppelin, Rod Stewart, The Bee Gees, Aerosmith, and Michael Jackson. Is Beyonce Knowles really sixth on the list? Wow. Beyonce Knowles said, courtesy of E!, "I'm so blessed to wake up every morning and do what I love. I don't take it for granted-I'm so grateful, I'm so honored, I'm so humbled by this award."

Other winners at this year's American Music Awards included Fergie for Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, Nickelback for Favorite Pop/Rock Band, Tim McGraw for Favorite Country Male Artist, Rascal Flatts for Favorite Country Band, Akon for Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist, Rihanna for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist, and, of course, High School Musical 2 for Favorite Soundtrack.

Nominees at the American Music Awards were chosen based on album sales and radio play and then fans chose the winners.
