Australia Has Spoken, Idol Sales A Disaster

First week sales for 2007 Australian Idol winner Natalie Gauci have been a disaster. Gauci has not only become the first Idol winner to not top the chart with the winning song. The song has sold less than 8000 units, including physical CD and downloads.

'Here I Am' sold 7463 units and came in at number two. Timbaland's number one song 'Apologize' sold 12,063 units.

The song was available for download not long after the winning announcement was made. Only 3,271 units sold via download.

Idol's first winner Guy Sebastian maintained a Top 10 position after three weeks with his 'The Memphis Album'. The album has sold 25,231 units after three weeks on the chart.

Shannon Noll's 'Turn It Up' was at number 41 this week after 11 weeks on the chart. 'Turn It Up' sold 1771 units last week.

Last year's winner Damien Leith is at 47 this week with 'Where We Land'. It sold 1967 units in its 15th week on the chart.

While Noll and Sebastian have managed to maintain a profile after Idol, the shows second and third season winners Casey Donovan and Kate DeAraugo achieved not more than 15 minutes of fame.

One tactic that worked for the 2006 season was to release a compilation of the winners performances instead of a studio album. Like Leith last year, Natalie Gauci will also have a 'The Winner's Journey' CD. It will be released this weekend.
