Canadian Idol auditions here this weekend

Get those vocal chords toasty warm and ready to rock - Canadian Idol's 10-city search for Canada's next singing sensation kicks off in Edmonton this weekend at the West Edmonton Mall.

The auditions happen Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the NewCap Radio Stage. The venue is located at the west end of the mall on the main floor, near Entrance 56 and HMV.

Idol wannabes may arrive as early as 6 a.m. but should be prepared to wait in line.

The Idol crew last stopped in Edmonton in 2006 for Season Four auditions. A record 1,500 people showed up at the WEM tryouts, and the celebrity judging round was extended by a day.

In 2007, the Idol auditions skipped Edmonton, stopping in Calgary instead. Among those who auditioned there was Drumheller's Jaydee Bixby, who came second in the show.

Successful competitors this weekend will get a blue ticket and will audition again for the celebrity judges on Monday and Tuesday. If they get a gold ticket from the celebrity judges, they will go to Toronto for the Top 100 round of the reality show.

Only one audition per city is permitted. But hopefuls who bomb in E-town could always travel to Calgary for auditions at the Sunridge Mall Feb. 2-3.
