American Idol - Match Day 3 - The Dudes
Be still, beating Idol hearts everywhere. David Archuleta is pushing his luck, to hear Simon Cowell talk about it — and if there's anything Simon likes to do, it's talk.
Last week, manchild Archuleta tore a cover, so to speak, off John Lennon's 'Imagine.' And — surprise! — it wasn't nearly as awful as it sounds, though why it reduced Paula Abdul to a puddle of goo is anyone's guess.
Simon gave Archuleta cred for showing nerve, but when the manchild followed up this week with Phil Collins' 'Another Day in Paradise' — again, not as awful as it sounds — Simon's notoriously thin patience began to show.
Too much of a downer, dude, Simon said, though not in so many words. How old are you, 17? Show some lightness, dude, it doesn't have to be dark all the time.
Archuleta is a lock for the final 12. And, some think, the final two. This season's Idol is living up to its advance notices, and not just because of the manchild. The guys sounded much, much better collectively this week than they did last.
Better yet, Archuleta hit a couple of bum notes on the Collins cover, suggesting he may not be the lock some were saying — well, Paula — as recently as last weak.
As for who's likely to go in Thursday's vote-off, I wouldn't count on Luke Menard sticking around too much longer. You know you're in trouble when the first words out of Randy Jackson's mouth are, "Dog, did you have a good time, baby?"
