Canadian Idol hits 'The Hammer '
Canadian Idol took its cross-country tour to Hamilton for the first time in the show's history hoping to find the next Brian Melo.
And the city wasn't going to let the opportunity pass them by.
More than 1,000 enthusiastic competitors showed up to audition at Eastgate Square to try and follow in the current Idol's footsteps, many of whom said they wouldn't have auditioned otherwise.
Cassandra Jankowski, who arrived at the mall at 5:20 am to be first in line, said being able to audition in Hamilton was "amazing."
"I probably wouldn't have had the time to get out (to Toronto) to audition. Because it was in Hamilton and I live so close to Eastgate, I was able to get here on my own without my parents having to take me somewhere," said Jankowski, who walked over to the mall from her nearby home.
She was encouraged that if Melo could be from Hamilton and win, so could she.
"It was amazing knowing that somebody actually from Hamilton, from so close around here, actually made it to the finals and won."
Hamilton went wild last year during Melo's rise on Idol, something that Mayor Fred Eisenberger can attest to.
"The outpouring of enthusiasm, we haven't seen in a long time. The last time we saw that was when the Ti Cats won the Grey Cup."
