Aussie on American Idol survives eviction

Perth singer Michael Johns will be mentored by country music queen Dolly Parton after cruising through the latest American Idol eviction round unscathed.

The 29-year-old returned to safer ground this week with a rousing performance of the Queen classics We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions, after some recent shaky performances.

It was a winner with judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, who hailed it his "shining moment" and the first example of his "star potential".

It has also proved popular with the American Idol audience, as Johns once again steered clear of the bottom three contestants.

He has now secured a place in the final nine contestants on the influential reality show, which has launched the international chart-topping careers of Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtry.

Californian singer Chikezie, 22, was voted off the show.

Johns will now get to work with the first of American Idol's celebrity mentors for this season, Dolly Parton.

The first concert Johns ever attended was Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers' Islands in the Stream tour, so it will be particularly special for the Aussie hopeful.

The other celebrity mentors for 2008 will be Mariah Carey, Neil Diamond and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Each mentor will help the finalists prepare for their Wednesday night performances and then take the Idol stage themselves to perform on the Thursday night results show.

The program, now in its seventh series, is being aired on pay TV channel Fox8 in Australia.
