The Idol Countdown: Five Essential Moments From Last Night’s “American Idol”

Does American Idol’s “sing a song from the year you were born” night do anything other than make a large portion of the show’s viewers feel old? Ramiele Malubay made the mistake of tackling Heart’s “Alone,” a song Carrie Underwood rocked to perfection in season four, and the judges weren’t wild for Carly Smithson’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” (our theory: she must have pissed off the judges behind the scenes). The favorite was again, bafflingly, Syesha Mercado with her rendition of Stephanie Mills’ “If I Were Your Woman,” even though she broke out that awful baby cry in her taped segment.
