Michael Johns 'like Hutchence'
AUSTRALIAN singer Michael Johns has again wowed the American Idol judges, drawing comparisons with INXS frontman Michael Hutchence.
The Perth-born contestant has cruised through the first few rounds of the television talent show, and has been identified as a frontrunner to take out the competition.
On the 1980s themed episode which aired in the US today, Johns sang the Simple Minds track Don't You (Forget About Me) to try to secure his place in the top 12 contenders.
The performance earned rave reviews from judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell.
"You remind me of Michael Hutchence. You've got that big old range, that big old voice,'' Jackson said.
"I loved it dude.''
Cowell agreed: "I really, really like you and I think you're going to do very, very well in this competition.''
American Idol is easily the most watched TV program in the US and has launched the international chart-topping careers of Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Chris Daughtry.
