Chaka Khan, 'Idol's' LaKisha Jones to join 'Color Purple'
Two music legends -- and one pop culture notable -- will make their Broadway debuts in the musical "The Color Purple" on Jan. 9, producers of the show said yesterday.
Chaka Khan, the eight-time Grammy winner, will join the cast as Sofia, playing opposite Benjamin "BeBe" Winans' Harpo. Winans' is the four-time Grammy winner who hails from the legendary first family of gospel music. Also coming aboard the show, which is about to begin its third year at the Broadway Theatre: "American Idol" finalist LaKisha Jones, who will perform the role of church soloist at all evening performances, stepping in to play Sofia during matinees.
Current lead actress Fantasia Barrino, the third-season "American Idol" winner, will leave the cast on Jan. 6. A search for her replacement continues.
