Critic's Corner Tuesday
As you can imagine given its status as TV's runaway top-rated hit, American Idol (Fox, tonight, 8 ET/PT) has long been immune to criticism. So let's pose this as a question rather than a complaint: Are Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest trying to prove who can be more tiresome?
If so, Seacrest is winning — but it's an annoyingly close contest and one that's hardly worth waging. The show apparently loves these snit-fit battles, delighting in their "live TV' spontaneity and regularly rehashing them in the next night's recap. Nonetheless, and real or exaggerated, they've become increasingly grating and personal, and for a family show, they're getting very close to inappropriate.
Here are the rules, children: Seacrest needs to stop behaving like a spoiled younger brother, poking at his older sibling and then whining when he gets poked back. As for Cowell, if you have something you feel you need to say about Seacrest's sexuality, say it. Otherwise, grow up and shut up.
